People have a choice between top stub checks and side tear. Others don’t have any particular preference although it’s fair to say that the majority of peoples’ checkbooks are full of side tear checks. This is more a default position than a deliberate choice.

One wonders whether those who use side tear checks have ever bothered to weigh the advantages of using top stub. Who knows?

Businesses are more likely to opt for top stub checks, though personally I am not sure why. It strikes me that there are some disadvantages here, but I won’t air them as they are personal thoughts and you are free to choose. At the end of the day it really doesn’t matter!

One is left wondering though for how much longer the bank check will survive. The common use of credit and debit cards and the ability to operate a bank account online is changing things. When we pay somebody online from our bank account to theirs it negates the use of a check. It simply by-passes any requirement for a paper trail which the check, in essence, provides.

To what degree we are now a cashless society I’m not sure. We certainly seem to be heading that way fast. I find that rather depressing. There is something very basic about handling money, and for it to become no more than a cyber currency, never existing in my life in touchable reality, leave a sense of detached unreality.

In the days before the credit card we were rarely in debt. In those days when just by opening out checkbooks we came face to face with a balance in our accounts, there was at least a momentary check on spending. That all seems to have gone, mores the pity.
